ACCESSIBILITY POLICY Last updated August 3, 2026
PetRank ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to making our website at https://www.pet-rank.com (the "Services") usable by as many people as possible, including people who navigate by keyboard or use assistive technology such as screen readers. This policy describes the accessibility features we have built so far and where we know we still fall short.
This is a description of current, real functionality rather than a certification of conformance with any particular standard (such as WCAG). We treat accessibility as ongoing work, not a finished state.
- KEYBOARD NAVIGATION
Interactive elements across the site are operable by keyboard, not just by mouse or touch:
Pet gallery cards can be reached by Tab and activated with Enter or Space, and show a visible focus outline so you can see where keyboard focus is at all times.
The pet search field has an associated label for assistive technology, and its clear button is independently reachable and labeled.
Icon-only buttons (close, previous/next image, copy link, view count, zoom and pan controls on the pet network graph, etc.) all have descriptive accessible names rather than relying on the icon alone.
Modals and dialogs (such as the photo upload dialog and the pet image preview) trap keyboard focus while open, so Tab and Shift+Tab cycle only through controls inside the dialog and cannot land on content behind it. Pressing Escape closes the dialog, and focus automatically returns to the element that opened it once it's closed.
- IMAGE ALT TEXT
Pet photos are given alt text equal to the pet's name, so screen readers announce which pet a photo belongs to rather than skipping it or reading a filename. Site imagery that isn't user content (such as our logo and banner) uses fixed, descriptive alt text.
We know this approach has limits: alt text is only as good as the pet name provided at upload, and we do not currently generate a richer visual description or enforce a fallback if a name is missing. Improving this is on our roadmap.
- WHAT WE ARE STILL WORKING ON
In the interest of being straightforward about where we are, not just where we're going, we are not yet claiming:
A formal audit or certification against WCAG or any other accessibility standard.
Automated accessibility testing in our development process.
A "skip to content" link for bypassing repeated navigation.
Live-region announcements for transient notifications (toasts), which currently update visually but are not automatically read aloud by screen readers.
Accessible alternatives for the interactive pet network graph, which is rendered on a canvas; its surrounding controls (search, zoom, pan, reset) are keyboard- and screen-reader-accessible, but the graph's nodes and connections themselves are visual-only today.
We are addressing these incrementally and will update this policy as they change.
- FEEDBACK
If you use assistive technology and run into something on our Services that doesn't work the way it should, we want to know about it. Please contact us at privacy@pet-rank.com with a description of the issue, the page you were on, and the browser or assistive technology you were using, and we will do our best to address it.
- DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS POLICY?
We may update this Accessibility Policy as we make further improvements to the Services. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this policy.
